Best Note-Taking Apps for Android: Capture, Offline Use, and Portability

The best note-taking app for Android depends on what your notes need to do after you capture them. Start with Google Keep for mixed quick capture, OneNote for notebook hierarchy and typed notes plus ink, ClickUp when a note should become assigned work, Samsung Notes for compatible Galaxy and S Pen workflows, Obsidian for local Markdown ownership, Notion for structured reference, Notesnook for vendor-documented device-side encryption, or MyScript Notes when searchable handwriting is central.

These are fit-based recommendations, not a universal ranking or a speed benchmark. A grocery list, a handwritten lecture page, a research library, and a meeting note that becomes a task should not be evaluated by the same standard. Compare capture friction, offline behavior, organization, privacy, cross-platform access, and the result of a real export test.

Notability is not included as a confirmed Android option. Its official Android page currently describes Android as coming and offers a beta waitlist, so its Android launch, feature set, and pricing are not established by the current official source set.

Best note-taking apps for Android: the short answer

Choose the app that matches the job you perform most often, then test it with representative notes before moving your archive.

  • Google Keep: mixed quick capture for text, audio, images, drawings, and lists. Google documents these Android note types.
  • Microsoft OneNote: notebook, section, and page hierarchy with typed content, voice, images, and ink.
  • ClickUp: notes that should become tasks in a selected List, with the user confirming the task details.
  • Samsung Notes: compatible Galaxy and S Pen workflows, including supported handwriting and Note Assist features.
  • Obsidian: local Markdown files for readers who want file-level ownership and a low conversion burden.
  • Notion: linked pages, databases, and structured reference collections.
  • Notesnook: notes where the vendor-documented encryption model and export options matter.
  • MyScript Notes: searchable handwriting and handwriting-to-text conversion for stylus users.

How to compare Android note apps without choosing by feature count

Weight five criteria before comparing feature lists. First, measure capture friction: how many steps separate an idea from a saved note? Second, identify whether handwriting, voice, images, or attachments are essential. Third, test offline behavior separately for opening, writing, searching, and accessing attachments. Fourth, decide whether notes are mainly an inbox, a reference system, or a source of assigned work. Fifth, examine privacy, account recovery, platform reach, and portability.

Offline access is not a single yes-or-no feature. An app may let you read existing notes without a connection but require connectivity for search, attachments, AI, or synchronization. Keep documents a specific conflict case: when the same note is edited on different devices while one is offline, conflicting versions may appear. Google explains this behavior.

Export also has two meanings. An export button proves that a file can be generated. It does not prove that another app can preserve attachments, links, audio, handwriting search, tags, or database structure. Treat the export as a candidate backup until a representative import has been reviewed.

Choose a notes app by the next action your notes must support, not by the number of features listed on its product page.

App Best fit and capture model Main constraint to test Portability signal
Google Keep Text, audio, images, drawings, and lists for quick capture Offline edits and conflicting versions Verify current export formats before relying on them
OneNote Notebooks, sections, pages, typing, voice, images, and ink Export conditions for the account and storage location Web notebook export has account limits; PDF is static
ClickUp Notes that become tasks in a selected List Title, description, List, assignee, and due-date mapping Inspect the created task and any document export
Samsung Notes Galaxy and S Pen note workflows Device eligibility, Note Assist conditions, and PDF output Test typed text and handwriting on the target device
Obsidian Local Markdown vaults and links Internal links, attachments, plugins, and sync method Markdown files remain readable outside the app
Notion Linked pages, databases, and reference structure Offline pages and workspace export fidelity HTML, Markdown, and CSV export is not a workspace rebuild
Notesnook Encrypted notes and notebooks Full offline mode, recovery, and import requirements Markdown, HTML, plain text, and PDF exports are documented
MyScript Notes Searchable handwriting and conversion Recognition quality with your own stylus Test an actual export and destination workflow

Which Android app fits each note-taking job?

Google Keep: mixed quick capture

Choose Keep when you need to save short thoughts in several forms without first designing a notebook system. Its Android app supports text, audio, images, drawings, and lists. Google also documents a Gemini connection that can create, find, and update Keep notes and lists when Google Workspace is connected and Keep Activity is enabled. Gemini output may be inaccurate or outdated, so review generated lists and changes before relying on them.

Verification task: create an audio note, a checklist, and an image note. Then edit one note on two devices while one device is offline. Check for conflicting versions and decide which copy is authoritative before adding more edits.

Microsoft OneNote: hierarchy with mixed ink and typing

Choose OneNote when notebooks, sections, and pages give your material a useful structure, or when a page needs typed content and ink together. Microsoft documents an Android quick-capture bar for text, voice, ink, and images. Its optional floating badge can be enabled in settings and saves a capture to the configured default section. See Microsoft’s Android capture guide and floating badge instructions.

Verification task: confirm the export route for your account before treating OneNote as an archive. Microsoft’s documented web notebook export applies to personal OneDrive notebooks, not work or school OneDrive or SharePoint notebooks. A PDF is a static page snapshot, not an editable notebook migration. Review the documented export conditions.

ClickUp: notes that should become tracked work

Choose ClickUp when a note is a starting point for work rather than only a record. ClickUp documents a user-initiated Notepad conversion in which the note title becomes the task title, the note contents become the description, and the user selects the destination List. The user can add task details before creating the task. This documented workflow does not establish automatic duplicate detection, inferred assignments, or approval of action items.

Verification task: convert one sample note and inspect the task title, description, destination List, assignee, due date, and source-note handling. ClickUp Brain availability and usage limits vary by plan. If your team needs help designing a controlled note-to-task workflow, see ClickUp consulting.

Samsung Notes: compatible Galaxy and S Pen workflows

Choose Samsung Notes when your Galaxy device and software support the functions you need. Samsung documents typed notes, S Pen input, handwriting conversion, PDF operations, and Note Assist features on supported devices. For specified Note Assist functions, Samsung documents supported hardware and software, a Samsung account, an internet connection, and a 200 to 4,000 character requirement.

Verification task: on the target device, create a page containing typed text and handwriting, use the functions you need, and export it as PDF. Check search, selection, formatting, and annotation behavior in the result. Samsung confirms PDF export, but the reviewed documentation does not establish universal searchability or rasterization behavior for every handwriting sample.

Obsidian: local Markdown ownership

Choose Obsidian when local files and future migration matter more than a managed notebook service. Obsidian documents its notes as Markdown-formatted plain-text files in a local vault, which can continue working offline. Synchronization is a separate choice. Configured Obsidian Sync can queue changes for later synchronization, while third-party file-sync methods have their own behavior. Sync is not a backup, so retain a separate copy.

Verification task: copy a small vault and inspect internal links, attachments, the .obsidian configuration folder, and any plugins or settings you rely on. Confirm that the destination preserves the folder structure before moving a larger vault.

Notion: structured reference collections

Choose Notion when notes should become linked pages, databases, and a reference structure rather than isolated scraps. Notion documents HTML, Markdown, and CSV exports and warns that re-uploading exported files does not instantly recreate a workspace. Its current plan information describes offline use on mobile and desktop, but the pages and files available in a particular Android workflow should be tested.

Verification task: export a small set containing a database, linked pages, and files. Inspect the result in the intended destination and check relations, views, permissions, links, and workspace structure individually. Do not treat a valid export archive as proof of a workspace rebuild. See the Notion backup guidance.

Notesnook: encryption-focused notes

Choose Notesnook when its encryption approach, recovery requirements, and export options fit your needs. The vendor says note data is encrypted on the device before synchronization and documents PDF, HTML, Markdown, Markdown with frontmatter, and plain-text exports. This is vendor documentation, not an independent security audit. Notesnook distinguishes local note work from full offline mode, which may depend on plan.

Verification task: check the offline controls available on your plan, preserve the password and recovery material securely, then export and inspect attachments and formatting. The documented importer runs through the web or desktop app rather than directly on mobile. Do not assume an open-format export preserves every app-specific feature.

MyScript Notes: searchable handwriting

Choose MyScript Notes when writing by hand and later searching or converting that writing is central to your work. MyScript documents searchable handwriting and handwriting-to-text conversion and recommends an active pen for the best experience, while also documenting support for other styluses. Its Windows product is documented separately as Nebo, so the product name should not be confused with a claim that no desktop product exists.

Verification task: write a page with your own stylus, convert several lines, and search for a phrase you wrote. Test names, equations, and technical terms that matter to you before depending on recognition for study or professional records.

Decision point

A supported feature is not automatically a usable workflow. For each candidate, identify the input, the resulting note or task, the validation step, and the fallback when the device, account, plan, or connection does not support it.

Practical app workflows and failure handling

The following examples distinguish documented product actions from proposed review logic. The app action is based on the cited vendor documentation. The validation and fallback steps are editorial operating guidance, not vendor-published automation templates.

Trigger and input AI or app job Validation Action and fallback
Keep text, audio, image, drawing, or list capture Keep saves the selected note type. Optional Gemini integration can create, find, or update a note or list under its documented connection and activity conditions. Review the content and inspect conflicting offline versions. Keep the reviewed item. If Gemini is unavailable or wrong, edit the note directly.
OneNote quick capture or floating badge OneNote places text, voice, ink, or image content in the configured notebook section. Confirm the destination section and verify that the account can export the notebook if needed. Retain the source notebook. Use a PDF only when a static snapshot is sufficient.
ClickUp note marked as actionable The documented manual conversion maps title to task title and body to description; AI is optional and plan-dependent. Check List, title, description, assignee, due date, and whether a duplicate task already exists. Create only after user confirmation. Keep or archive the source note according to a named owner’s decision.
Samsung handwriting on a supported Galaxy device Samsung Notes can apply supported handwriting conversion or Note Assist functions. Check device, One UI, account, internet, character range, and PDF output. Keep the original note if conversion or export is unsuitable; use the original as the authoritative copy.
Obsidian vault copied to another device Local Markdown files remain the source material; Sync or another method handles synchronization if configured. Count files, open links, inspect attachments, and check plugins and settings. Restore the prior vault or backup if links or attachments fail.
Notion database or linked reference export Notion generates HTML, Markdown, or CSV content according to the export route. Compare pages, files, relations, views, permissions, and known search terms. Retain the original workspace when structure is required and the export cannot recreate it.
Notesnook encrypted archive or import Notesnook exports documented text and document formats and imports through web or desktop. Confirm authentication, attachment counts, formatting, and recovery material. Keep the encrypted or untouched source archive if an open-format export loses app-specific data.
MyScript Notes handwriting capture Handwriting can be searched and converted to text using supported stylus input. Search phrases written with the actual pen and review converted lines. Retain the handwritten original when recognition is unsuitable for names, equations, or technical terms.

Android’s default notes role: why capture options differ by phone

Android defines an optional NOTES role, not one universal built-in notes app. Where an OEM exposes the role, an eligible app may receive capture entry points such as lock-screen launch, a floating window, screen-content capture, or a stylus action. Android’s platform documentation describes the capability, while its developer guide explains eligibility and implementation requirements.

OEMs control whether the role is available, and only one app can hold it at a time. Platform support does not confirm that Google Keep, OneNote, Samsung Notes, Notability, or any other named app is eligible on every phone. Check the actual device settings, Android version, OEM behavior, and candidate app before choosing based on a lock-screen shortcut or stylus button.

Test portability before moving your notes

Use a small, representative corpus rather than exporting your entire archive first. Include plain text, headings, lists, checkboxes, images, PDFs, attachments, handwriting, audio, transcripts, links, tags, tables, and duplicate titles if those content types matter to you. Export before uninstalling the source app, retain the untouched archive, import where supported, and compare the result with the source.

01Define the test corpusThe note owner selects representative notes and records source note, attachment, and media counts.
02Export and retain the archiveExport before uninstalling the source app. Record the source app, export batch, format, and stable source note ID when available.
03Import into the trial destinationUse the destination’s documented importer where available and record destination note and attachment counts.
04Validate retrieval and contentSearch known phrases, open each media type, inspect links and formatting, and check whether handwriting and audio remain usable.
05Approve or resolve issuesA named human reviewer records missing content or approves the result. Delete source notes only after required content works and the original archive is retained.

For migration tracking, use separate records for a source note and each export attempt. A note-level identifier should combine the source app, source account where relevant, and stable source note ID. An export-run identifier should combine that source note ID with the export batch and format. If no vendor ID exists, assign a clearly labeled local archive ID. Do not use title alone because titles can collide.

If concurrent workers can process the same export, enforce uniqueness with a database constraint or transactional upsert on the chosen source-note, batch, and format key. A lookup followed by an insert is not race-safe. These identifiers and fields are proposed editorial tracking patterns, not vendor schemas. Deterministic checks should handle file existence, attachment counts, required fields, and completed batches. AI may suggest classifications or action items, but a human should review any proposal before it creates work or changes source data.

A two-week selection test and final decision

Shortlist two apps based on the job that matters most and use both with real notes for two weeks. Keep the source app active during the trial. Track time to capture, retrieval success, offline read and write behavior, offline search, sync conflicts, attachment access, and the proportion of representative notes that survive export with the content you need.

AI should support the decision rather than determine it. Confirm the account, plan, network, device, and data conditions for each AI feature. Review summaries, converted handwriting, and proposed action items before they replace source material or create assigned work. Product terms and capabilities change, so check current vendor documentation for any feature you intend to rely on.

Choose only after these checks
  • Can you capture your common note types without unnecessary steps?
  • Can you read, write, search, and open required attachments offline?
  • Does the organization model fit an inbox, reference library, or tracked work?
  • Do the encryption, recovery, account, and platform conditions fit your notes?
  • Did a representative export pass import, search, link, media, and human-review checks?

In short, use Keep for varied quick capture, OneNote for hierarchy and mixed ink, ClickUp for notes that become tasks, Samsung Notes for compatible Galaxy workflows, Obsidian for local Markdown ownership, Notion for structured reference, Notesnook for encryption-focused notes, and MyScript Notes for handwriting recognition. Choose only after the candidate passes your own capture, retrieval, offline, and portability tests.
