How to Delete ChatGPT History: Chats, Memories, and Files

To delete one ChatGPT conversation, open its more-options menu, choose Delete, and confirm. To delete all chats, go to Settings > Data controls > Delete all chats and confirm. First check that you are using the correct account or workspace.

Deleting a chat is not the same as archiving it, using Temporary Chat, turning off model improvement, deleting a saved memory, or removing a separately stored file. This guide matches each goal to the appropriate control and explains what may require a separate action.

OpenAI says deleted chats cannot be restored through ChatGPT, APIs, or Support. The controls and labels can vary by platform, plan, region, account type, and managed workspace, so follow the options currently shown in your account.

The fastest way to delete ChatGPT history

Use Delete for one conversation, or use the bulk control in Data controls for all chats. Choose Archive instead when you only want to remove a conversation from the regular sidebar while keeping it.

  • Web: Find the conversation in the history sidebar, open its more-options menu, select Delete, and confirm.
  • iOS or Android: Open chat history, press and hold the conversation title, select Delete, and confirm if prompted.
  • All chats: Open Settings > Data controls > Delete all chats, review the warning, and confirm. Bulk deletion can include project chats.

These controls are described in OpenAI’s chat deletion and archiving instructions. Treat a confirmed deletion as irreversible.

Choose the control that matches your goal

Control What it changes What it does not do
Archive Hides a chat from the regular sidebar. Does not delete the chat or shorten its retention.
Delete Removes a chat from your account view and schedules it for system deletion. Does not necessarily remove separate memories, files, or original data in connected apps.
Temporary Chat Keeps a new conversation out of ordinary history and does not create or update memories. Does not guarantee zero retention. OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety.
Improve the model for everyone Controls whether eligible new conversations are used to improve models. Does not delete or hide existing chats.

Temporary Chat and the model-improvement setting solve different problems. Temporary Chat may use existing memories or custom instructions when personalization is enabled. If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat and follows ordinary settings. See OpenAI’s guidance on Temporary Chat, Data controls, and model improvement.

A hidden chat, a deleted chat, a Temporary Chat, and a chat excluded from model improvement are four different outcomes. Choose the control for the specific change you want.

Delete one chat or all chats

Before deleting, verify the signed-in account or workspace and identify the intended conversation. OpenAI says a deleted chat is removed from the account view immediately and scheduled for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days. Exceptions include data already de-identified and disassociated from the account, and information retained longer for legal or security obligations.

01Confirm scopeCheck the account or workspace, then decide whether the target is one conversation or all chats. For bulk deletion, consider project conversations before confirming.
02Select DeleteUse the conversation menu for one chat, or use Settings > Data controls > Delete all chats for a bulk action. Use Archive only when keeping the chat is acceptable.
03Complete confirmationRead the on-screen confirmation and approve the action only when the account, target, and requested outcome are correct.
04Check the account viewConfirm the conversation is no longer visible in the expected account view. Then inspect memories, saved files, or external copies separately when relevant.

Permanent system deletion is not necessarily immediate or universal across related locations. OpenAI’s chat and file retention guidance explains the documented schedule and exceptions.

Troubleshoot a missing or apparently undeleted chat

If a conversation is missing before you delete it, first check the account and workspace. Search chat history, review Archived Chats in Data controls, and refresh or sign in again if the interface appears out of date. Check the service status page if the history view is not loading normally.

An archived chat is hidden, not deleted. A memory, Library or Space file, connected-app record, or downloaded export may also exist separately from the conversation. A chat disappearing from the sidebar therefore does not prove that every related location has been cleared. For a managed account, legal hold, regulated record, or organization retention question, contact the workspace administrator or privacy contact.

Stop new chats from appearing in history or improving models

To keep a new conversation out of ordinary history, start a new chat and select the Temporary control in the top-right area before composing. Temporary Chats do not appear in history and do not create or update memories, but OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. If a GPT action sends information to a third party, that service’s policies also apply.

To keep chats in history while stopping eligible new conversations from improving models, go to Settings > Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI documents this control for personal Free, Plus, and Pro accounts. It does not remove existing chats. Voluntarily submitting thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback may make the associated conversation eligible for model improvement even after opting out.

Decision point

Choose Temporary Chat before writing when history and new memory creation are the concern. Choose the model-improvement setting when retaining the conversation is acceptable but eligible new chats should not be used for model improvement. Do not use either control as a substitute for deleting an existing chat.

Check memories, files, and connected-app data separately

A conversation is only one possible location for information. A saved memory may remain after the chat that prompted it is deleted. Review Settings > Personalization > Memory when available and delete saved memories separately. Turning off Reference chat history does not delete the original chats; OpenAI says information derived from that feature is scheduled for deletion within 30 days after it is turned off. These are separate actions from deleting saved memories.

Files can also have a separate retention path. Deleting a conversation does not delete files saved separately in Library or Space. Review those locations and delete applicable files separately. If a conversation used connected-app data, deleting the conversation removes connected-app data retained within that conversation, subject to ordinary retention exceptions. It does not delete the original data in the connected app. Disconnecting an app prevents future access but does not erase content already retained in a conversation.

Related-data check
  • Review saved memories and delete any item that should not remain.
  • Check Library or Space for files saved separately from the conversation.
  • Review other conversations that contain relevant connected-app data.
  • Ask the owner of the connected service to remove the original external data when required.
  • Check downloaded, synced, shared, or backed-up exports under your own device or organization rules.

Not every account has every feature or data location. The separate ConsultEvoClickUp setup and automationA separate option for structuring an organization’s internal intake and tracking process. It does not connect to ChatGPT or delete ChatGPT data.

Export data or delete the account

An export is a copy request, not a deletion action. Request one from Settings > Data controls > Export data, or use the Privacy Portal. Availability can differ for managed workspaces. OpenAI’s export instructions explain the request process.

After downloading an export, review copies in your downloads folder, synced storage, backups, or shared drives according to your own device or organization rules. OpenAI’s export documentation does not certify secure deletion from every local, backup, or cloud-storage location.

To delete an account, the documented routes include Settings > Account on the web, account settings and Data controls in the mobile apps, and the Privacy Portal when needed. Follow the current sign-in and ownership-verification prompts. Account deletion removes access to OpenAI services, including ChatGPT and the API.

Self-service deletion is not available inside managed Business, Enterprise, Edu, or Healthcare workspaces. Contact the organization instead. See OpenAI’s account-deletion instructions for current web, iOS, Android, and Privacy Portal routes.

Check who bills your subscription before deleting the account. Apple App Store and Google Play subscriptions must be canceled through the relevant store. OpenAI’s current account-deletion guidance treats direct ChatGPT subscriptions differently, while account deletion does not automatically cancel app-store subscriptions. Use the official subscription cancellation guidance when the billing route is unclear.

A practical tracking record for organization-managed requests

Organizations may need an internal record of what a person asked to change. This is an illustrative tracking design, not an OpenAI schema, API response, or supported ChatGPT deletion integration. Keep one row per target action. Do not combine a chat, memory, file, export, or subscription into one row merely because they came from the same request.

{
  "request_id": "privacy-2026-00041",
  "account_scope": "workspace-name",
  "target_type": "chat",
  "target_id_or_locator": "conversation-locator",
  "requested_action": "delete",
  "confirmation_status": "confirmed_in_chatgpt",
  "requested_at": "2026-11-08T14:30:00Z",
  "verification_checked_at": "2026-11-08T14:35:00Z"
}

For a memory or Library file, create a separate row with its own target type and locator. If a request can be submitted more than once, include the provider, target, action, and request version in a database-enforced unique key. Use a transactional upsert or another atomic uniqueness mechanism when concurrent workers are possible. A read-then-insert check alone can create duplicate requests.

Use deterministic rules for account scope, target type, billing provider, confirmation text, and duplicate detection. An AI classifier may help interpret informal wording, but a person should confirm destructive actions. Route unclear ownership, legal holds, failed verification, and managed-workspace retention questions to the responsible administrator. Do not claim permanent deletion solely because a sidebar item disappeared.

Frequently asked questions

Can I recover a deleted ChatGPT chat?

No. OpenAI says deleted chats cannot be restored through the interface, APIs, or Support. Confirm the target before deleting.

Does deletion take effect immediately?

The chat is removed from your account view immediately. Permanent system deletion is scheduled within 30 days, subject to documented exceptions for matters such as de-identified data or legal and security obligations.

Does deleting a chat remove memories and files?

Not necessarily. Review saved memories and files stored separately in Library or Space. Connected-app originals also require action in the connected service.

Does turning off model improvement delete existing chats?

No. It is a separate setting that controls eligible new conversations. Existing chats remain unless you delete them.

Does account deletion cancel every subscription?

No. Apple and Google Play subscriptions require separate cancellation through the relevant store. Direct ChatGPT subscriptions are handled differently under OpenAI’s current account-deletion guidance.
