Make Required Views in ClickUp

Make Required Views in ClickUp

In ClickUp, you can make specific views required so they are automatically added to every new List, Folder, or Space you create. This helps standardize how your team sees and manages work.

This guide explains what required views are, who can use them, and how to enable, use, and remove them for consistent workflows.

What are required views in ClickUp?

Required views in ClickUp are views that are automatically added to the Views Bar of new locations. When you mark a view as required, it becomes part of the default layout for future Lists, Folders, or Spaces depending on where you configure it.

These views do not change existing locations. They only affect locations created after the required view has been set up.

Who can set required views in ClickUp?

Not every user in ClickUp can configure required views. The option is restricted to specific roles and settings to keep workspace layouts under control.

  • Only Workspace owners and admins can make a view required.
  • Owners and admins can do this from any List, Folder, or Space where they have permission to manage views.
  • Regular members and guests cannot set required views in ClickUp.

Where required views work in ClickUp

Required views in ClickUp are available in multiple levels of your hierarchy, but they are limited to the hierarchical Future of Work experience.

You can make a required view at these levels:

  • List
  • Folder
  • Space

Required views are only available when using ClickUp’s hierarchical Future of Work experience. If your workspace is not using this experience, you will not see the option to make a view required.

How required views behave in ClickUp

After you mark a view as required, ClickUp uses it as a template for future locations at that level of the hierarchy.

  • If you make a view required in a Space, the view is automatically added to every new List created within that Space.
  • If you make a view required in a Folder, the view is automatically added to every new List created inside that Folder.
  • If you make a view required in a List, the view is only applied to that List and does not cascade down further.

Required views do not:

  • Retroactively update existing Lists, Folders, or Spaces.
  • Override custom views that users add manually.
  • Duplicate views on locations that already have the same view type and settings.

How to make a required view in ClickUp

Follow these steps to make a view required from the Views Bar in ClickUp. You need to start on a List, Folder, or Space that already has the view you want to reuse.

Step 1: Open your location in ClickUp

  1. Go to the relevant List, Folder, or Space in ClickUp.
  2. Make sure you can see the Views Bar at the top of the page.

Step 2: Choose the view you want to require

  1. In the Views Bar, locate the view you want to make required.
  2. Click the view tab to open it and confirm that layout, filters, and settings are configured the way you need.

Step 3: Make the view required

  1. Hover over the view name in the Views Bar.
  2. Click the ellipsis icon (three dots) next to the view name.
  3. From the menu, select Make required.
  4. Confirm your selection if prompted.

Once you complete these steps, ClickUp marks that view as required for future locations at the same level.

How required views work at each hierarchy level

The behavior of required views depends on where you set them up in ClickUp. Understanding this hierarchy ensures your views appear exactly where you expect.

Required views at the Space level in ClickUp

When you set a required view in a Space, ClickUp automatically adds that view to every new List created anywhere inside that Space.

  • Use this when you want every team or project in a Space to share the same core views.
  • For example, you might add a required List view, Board view, or Calendar view that every new List should include.

Required views at the Folder level in ClickUp

When you set a required view inside a Folder, ClickUp applies that view only to new Lists created within that Folder.

  • Use this when specific project groups or departments need their own standardized views.
  • Existing Lists in the Folder are not modified by required views.

Required views at the List level in ClickUp

When you make a view required on a specific List, ClickUp keeps that setting limited to the current List.

  • No other Lists, Folders, or Spaces are affected.
  • This is useful when one List needs key views locked in for people who clone or reuse that List layout.

How to remove a required view in ClickUp

If you no longer want a view to be required, you can easily turn the setting off in ClickUp.

Steps to remove a required view

  1. Open the List, Folder, or Space where the required view was created.
  2. In the Views Bar, hover over the view that is currently required.
  3. Click the ellipsis icon next to the view name.
  4. Select Remove required (or similar option shown in your interface).

After you remove the required setting:

  • ClickUp stops automatically adding that view to new locations.
  • Existing Lists that already have the view are not removed or changed.

Tips for using required views in ClickUp

Required views are powerful, but they work best when planned carefully. Here are some recommendations to get the most from them in ClickUp:

  • Standardize per team: Decide which views each team or Space needs before you make them required.
  • Start at the Space level: Use Space-level required views for company-wide or department-wide standards.
  • Use Folder-level views for special workflows: Reserve Folder-level required views for specialized projects or clients.
  • Avoid clutter: Only make views required if most users will actually use them. Too many required views can crowd the Views Bar.
