AI Detection Tools: How to Choose and Use Results Safely

Choose an AI detection tool for the language, input type, result detail and decision it must support. Then treat its output as a review signal, not proof of authorship. An editorial team screening English drafts through an API, for example, should verify language calibration, useful minimum text length, request limits, billing, retention and the route to a human reviewer before buying a plan.

This guide compares capabilities documented by vendors as of October 20, 2026. It is not an independent accuracy benchmark or a permanent price ranking. An AI text detector estimates whether submitted writing resembles AI-generated text. OCR extracts text from an image or document, while AI-image detection is a separate task.

The practical difference is important: a detector can produce an observation, but your editorial policy produces the decision. Keep those two things separate in both your workflow and your records.

How to choose an AI detection tool

Start with the decision the tool must support. For editorial screening, test the target language and typical text length, inspect the result detail, and define who reviews uncertain cases. For automation, also verify API access, request limits, billing units, privacy and deletion terms, model identifiers, and whether your system can retain the exact submitted text version.

Do not choose by a headline accuracy percentage alone. Vendor claims may use different languages, samples, thresholds and model versions, so they are not directly comparable without matched testing. Copyleaks documents a text API and result detail in its AI-text API overview. Turnitin states in its AI-writing report guidance that the result should not be the sole basis for adverse action.

Choose a detector for the input and decision it must support, not for its biggest advertised accuracy number.

What an AI detector can and cannot tell you

A detector score or label is an observation from a particular tool and model version. It does not establish who wrote a passage. Results may classify a whole document, flag sentence or section ranges, or describe text extracted through OCR. These are different output types and should not be stored or interpreted as interchangeable.

False positives and language bias matter. Stanford HAI summarized research finding that AI detectors could incorrectly flag writing by non-native English speakers at elevated rates. Results can also vary with language, text length, editing, generation settings, detector version and threshold.

When a result could affect education, employment, legal standing or reputation, have a reviewer inspect relevant source material and process evidence. Provide a correction or appeal route. Do not turn a score directly into an accusation or automatic rejection.

Compare tools by the job you need them to do

The options below summarize documented capabilities and operational questions. They are not comparative accuracy ratings.

Tool or option Verified capability Operational constraint Best-fit question
Copyleaks REST text API with overall and per-section results. Detection is documented across 30 languages. AI Logic explanations cover fewer languages than detection. Check endpoint limits, scan settings and current credit terms. Do you need section detail and a documented text API?
ZeroGPT Text API returning verdict, language, confidence-related fields and calibration status. Requests are limited to 15,000 characters. Its ai_score means detection strength, not a literal authorship probability. Can you manage long text as separate scans and route unvalidated languages safely?
Originality.ai Version 3 API can run selected checks, including AI detection, plagiarism, facts, readability, grammar and content quality. Check the current model identifier, plan access, storage setting, rate limit and auto-top-up configuration. Do you need configurable content checks in one API operation?
Winston AI Product documentation lists OCR and an API offering. Its API page lists English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, German, Polish, Italian, Romanian, Indonesian, Tagalog and Simplified Chinese. A complete public API request and response schema was not verified. Confirm developer access and current input support. Do you need OCR in the product, or a documented developer integration?
Crossplag Its official description presents a percentage classifier with Human, Mix and AI categories. The accessible description is old. Current API, pricing and detailed technical documentation were not verified. Can you confirm current availability and requirements directly?
Hugging Face, GLTR and Writer Hugging Face hosts independent models. GLTR is historical research. The cited Writer detector URL redirects to its main platform. Hugging Face is not one detector. GLTR availability was not verified, and Writer’s older limits are unverified. Are you prepared to assess a specific model, deployment or current product page?

For implementation details, see the Copyleaks synchronous text API guide, ZeroGPT API reference and Originality.ai API reference. Winston’s API overview confirms an API offering but does not provide a complete public request and response sequence. Do not build against an assumed schema.

Copyleaks documents separate text, image and video detection data types in its data-type reference. Winston lists OCR for pictures and handwriting on its current pricing and feature page. OCR extraction does not determine whether the text was AI-written, and AI-image detection is not the same as either OCR or text classification.

Text classification

Screen native or extracted text

The detector estimates whether text resembles AI-generated writing. Its output does not identify the writer or prove the source of the text.

Image and OCR workflow

Keep extraction separate

OCR turns image content into text for a possible later scan. Validate extraction quality and retain the source image because OCR error and detector uncertainty are different problems.

Check the buying details before committing

Pricing, plans and product features change. Compare live vendor terms at the time of purchase instead of relying on an older price table. Copyleaks currently describes credit-based plans on its pricing page. Winston displays credit-based tiers and promotional pricing on its pricing page. Originality.ai shows current plan information on its pricing page.

  • Billing unit: Confirm whether charges are by credit, word, request, page or enabled check. Ask whether failed requests and retries consume credits.
  • Access and limits: Verify API access for the precise plan, maximum request size, rate limit and endpoint-specific restrictions.
  • Language: Check interface, API detection and explanation coverage separately. A listed language is not necessarily calibrated for your use case.
  • Result and provenance: Ask whether results include section spans, a stable scan ID and the model version used.
  • Privacy: Confirm storage, deletion, retention and training terms before sending confidential or regulated material.
  • Spend controls: Check credit balances, monthly ceilings and automatic top-up settings before unattended scans.

Run a paid pilot on representative samples in every target language. Record the plan, settings and documentation date. Measure successful scan rate, latency, cost per reviewed item, percentage routed to human review and reviewer overturns. These measures assess workflow fit, not detector accuracy.

Implementation patterns for a review workflow

The following patterns distinguish documented vendor operations from proposed local workflow design. In every case, the detector produces an observation and your system applies validation, routing and ownership.

Trigger and input AI job and output Validation and fallback Action and destination
A saved text revision is submitted with a unique local run ID. Copyleaks receives raw text at its documented synchronous endpoint and returns overall and section results. Reject empty or too-short input, check language, enforce a local payload limit, and distinguish sandbox output from live results. Store the raw observation against the content revision and send a review status to an editorial queue.
A text string is sent to ZeroGPT with Bearer authentication. The API returns verdict, is_ai, ai_score, confidence tier, language, word count and calibration status. Split text above 15,000 characters. Handle HTTP 429 and Retry-After. Route fallback_unvalidated to human review or a non-decision-grade state. Store each request and chunk separately. Do not average chunk scores into an unsupported document-level claim.
A content revision is submitted to Originality.ai with selected checks. The Version 3 scan can return selected AI, plagiarism, facts, readability, grammar and content-quality results. Confirm the model identifier, storage choice, plan access and 500-request-per-minute limit. Control auto-top-up before unattended use. Store each returned check as an observation associated with the revision. Keep any editorial approval status separate.
An editor submits an image or document containing printed or handwritten text. Winston’s documented product workflow can use OCR to extract text. Text detection and AI-image detection remain separate operations. Validate OCR output, retain the original file, and confirm the current API schema before building an integration. Create a review item containing the source-file reference, extracted text and any later text-detection result.

These are architecture patterns, not complete vendor templates. The Copyleaks, ZeroGPT and Originality.ai scan operations are documented. The queue, database records, approval rules and exception ownership are proposed implementation choices.

A practical review workflow for detector results

A CMS or document repository should remain the system of record for the draft and its immutable revision. The detector should supply a separate observation. Editorial policy and a named reviewer should own the decision.

01Capture the revisionSave the exact text or original file, revision ID and input hash. The content system owns this immutable source record.
02Validate before callingCheck non-empty input, useful length, supported language, permission to process the content and any local privacy restriction. Rules handle these deterministic checks.
03Run and persist the scanRecord vendor, submitted or returned model identifier, language, request time and run ID. For chunked content, retain chunk index and chunk hash.
04Apply the review gateRoute unsupported, uncalibrated, too-short or borderline results to a named reviewer. A high signal may hold a draft for review, but it does not determine authorship.
05Write the human decisionSave reviewer identity, decision reason, timestamp and outcome in a separate editorial decision record. Provide a correction or appeal path for consequential decisions.

What API integrations need to preserve

Model records at the right grain. One content version is not one scan request. A request is not a detector result. A document-level result is not a flagged sentence. None of these is an editorial decision or a dashboard aggregate.

  • Content version: stable content ID, immutable revision ID and hash of the exact text or file submitted.
  • Detector run: unique run ID, vendor, model version if available, request time, language, input character and word counts, and purpose.
  • Raw observation: protected response reference, score or verdict, calibration status and section or chunk details where returned.
  • Reported summary: dashboard period, metric definition and aggregation scope. It should link back to run-level observations rather than replace them.
  • Editorial decision: review status, reviewer ID, timestamp and reason, stored independently from the vendor observation.
  • CRM event: if a business process needs a contact or deal update, store that event separately from the content observation and editorial decision.

Prevent duplicate records with a database-enforced unique key for the intended row grain. For a detector run, a proposed key is content_version_id + vendor + vendor_model_version + input_hash + run_purpose. Add chunk_index and chunk_hash when the row represents a chunk. For a citation, use a citation ID or a source URL hash plus content version and location. For an aggregate, include the entity, period boundaries and metric-definition version.

A lookup followed by an insert is not race-safe when workers run concurrently. Use a unique database index with an atomic upsert or transaction. If a replayed event represents the same run, reuse the existing run record. If it is a deliberate rescan, create a new run ID and preserve the reason rather than silently duplicating a charge.

Persist local request state before calling a vendor. Retry only documented transient failures, honor rate-limit instructions and reconcile an uncertain response before resubmitting. Originality.ai documents a 500-request-per-minute limit and automatic credit top-up behavior. Its API also lets the caller choose whether to store a scan. If storage is disabled, retain the response locally if your privacy policy permits and requires it.

For OCR, preserve the original file and extracted text as separate records with their own hashes and extraction details. If handwriting OCR is poor, review or correct the extracted text before any detector call. Extraction error and detector output are different failure modes.

Before launch, verify these controls
  • Representative language and text-length tests pass, with a defined route for unsupported or uncalibrated results.
  • API access, request limits, response fields and model-version behavior are documented for the selected plan.
  • Storage, deletion, training and privacy terms are approved for the content type being submitted.
  • Credit units, failed-request charging, retry behavior and auto-top-up are included in a usage ceiling.
  • Each run links to an immutable content version and exact input hash, with database-enforced uniqueness at the declared row grain.
  • Raw observations, reported summaries, CRM events and editorial decisions are stored as separate records.
  • A named editorial owner handles review exceptions, while a named integration owner handles vendor errors and reconciliation.

If the workflow needs an automation layer, define validation, ownership and exception handling before selecting Zapier automation consulting. Store the result as a qualified observation rather than an unverified accusation in CRM systems.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI detector score a probability?

Not necessarily. ZeroGPT describes ai_score as detection strength, not a literal probability of AI authorship. Check each vendor’s metric definition before displaying or comparing scores.

Can one detector reliably recognize every current AI model?

No. Vendor model coverage claims do not establish performance on your language, text length, editing conditions or current model version. Test the selected tool on representative material.

Does OCR mean a tool detects AI-written handwriting or images?

No. OCR extracts text from an image. A text detector may then analyze that extracted text, while AI-image detection is a separate operation. Neither step identifies who created the source.

Is Hugging Face one detector?

No. It hosts independent models and applications with different authors, licenses, maintenance states and interfaces. Evaluate the specific model or Space you intend to use.

Make the decision operational

Shortlist tools against your actual input, language, required result detail, API access, privacy terms and total usage cost. Pilot them on representative content, preserve every scan’s provenance, and assign a human reviewer to uncertain or consequential cases. That gives your team a process it can explain and audit without asking a detector score to prove authorship.
