To cancel your ChatGPT subscription, first identify the platform that charged you: chatgpt.com, Apple, Google Play, or a ChatGPT Business workspace. Search for the original receipt or inspect the latest charge before choosing a cancellation route. If you used ChatGPT on an iPhone but the receipt shows a web purchase, cancel in ChatGPT Billing rather than Apple Settings.
Your ChatGPT account, Apple Account, Google Account, and Business workspace are separate identities. A subscription missing from one account may still be active under another. Uninstalling the app does not cancel billing, and deleting your ChatGPT account does not cancel an Apple-billed subscription.
This receipt-first approach prevents the most common mistake: trying to cancel based on the device used rather than the platform that owns the subscription.
Start with the billing platform, not the device
Search your email for the original purchase receipt or check the latest charge. Use the merchant name and the account associated with that purchase to select the cancellation route below. If you cannot find the receipt, inspect the subscription lists in your likely Apple and Google Accounts, as well as ChatGPT Billing, before treating the issue as a technical failure.
| Billing platform | Where to cancel | Refund route |
|---|---|---|
| chatgpt.com | ChatGPT Settings > Billing | OpenAI Support |
| Apple App Store | Apple Settings > Subscriptions | Apple |
| Google Play | Google Play subscriptions | OpenAI Support for ChatGPT refund requests |
| ChatGPT Business | Workspace settings > Billing | OpenAI Support, where applicable |
These are separate billing routes. OpenAI’s cancellation instructions cover personal subscriptions and the self-service Business path. Its duplicate-subscription guidance explains how subscriptions across the web and app stores can coexist.
Cancel through the platform that billed you
Cancel a subscription purchased on chatgpt.com
- Sign in to the ChatGPT account used to purchase the subscription.
- Open the account menu and select Settings > Billing.
- Under Cancel plan, select Cancel and confirm.
Check the resulting billing status and next billing date. OpenAI’s interface labels can vary, so use the current Billing controls if your account displays slightly different wording.
Cancel an Apple-billed subscription
- On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap Subscriptions, then select ChatGPT.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
Apple manages App Store subscriptions. If ChatGPT does not appear, check the Apple Account that made the purchase and look for the Apple receipt. Apple says an expiration notice without a Cancel button can mean the subscription is already canceled. See Apple’s subscription cancellation instructions.
Cancel a Google Play-billed subscription
- Sign in to the Google Account used for the purchase.
- Open Google Play subscriptions in the app or on the web and select ChatGPT.
- Select Cancel subscription and follow the confirmation prompts. On the web, you may need to select Manage first.
If ChatGPT is missing, switch Google Accounts and check the purchase receipt. Google’s subscription instructions explain account selection and cancellation. Prepaid subscriptions and payment plans can have different terms from ordinary recurring subscriptions.
Cancel a self-service ChatGPT Business plan
Use this route for a self-service ChatGPT Business workspace, not Enterprise or Edu. A workspace owner or appropriately authorized billing user must use the workspace that holds the subscription.
- Sign in and open the correct workspace.
- Go to Workspace settings > Billing > Manage plan.
- Select Cancel subscription and follow the confirmation steps.
If you lack billing permission, ask the workspace owner or organization billing administrator to handle the change. OpenAI’s Business billing guidance covers workspace billing and seats.
An iPhone is where you used the service, not proof that Apple billed it. A web purchase will not appear in Apple or Google subscriptions. Use the receipt to identify the billing platform before repeating cancellation steps.
Confirm cancellation and understand what changes
Ordinary cancellation stops future renewals and generally leaves paid features available through the current billing period. Check the status and next billing date on the platform that charged you, then save its confirmation. OpenAI advises canceling at least 24 hours before the next billing date. If you cancel later, the next charge may already have been processed.
- Confirm the account and billing platform match the receipt.
- Check that the platform shows canceled or an end-of-period status.
- Record the next billing date or the date paid access ends, if shown.
- Save the confirmation screen or message as evidence.
- Check whether another platform has a separate subscription and decide separately whether to request a refund.
Hypothetical team record: One record should represent one subscription on one billing platform. The fields below are a proposed operational log, not an OpenAI data format or an export from OpenAI.
{
"account_identifier": "[email protected]",
"billing_platform": "chatgpt.com",
"provider_subscription_reference": "reference-if-visible",
"status": "cancellation-confirmed",
"cancellation_requested_at": "2026-11-08T14:20:00Z",
"cancellation_confirmed_at": "2026-11-08T14:22:00Z",
"next_billing_date": "2026-12-01",
"evidence_reference": "billing-confirmation-2026-11-08"
}
For multiple subscriptions, keep separate records for each billing platform and provider subscription reference. Do not deduplicate only by email and calendar date. If several staff members can record the same cancellation, use a database-enforced uniqueness rule or a transactional upsert for the chosen record key. A read-then-insert check can race when concurrent runs occur. This is an illustrative recordkeeping pattern, not a cancellation API. OpenAI’s public documentation does not establish a public cancellation API or export endpoint.
Cancellation is not a refund request
Canceling stops renewal; it does not automatically refund a previous charge. Refund eligibility depends on the purchase platform, location, timing, and circumstances. If you want money back, make a separate request through the route for that purchase:
- Apple purchase: Request the refund from Apple.
- Web or Google Play purchase: OpenAI directs users to contact Support while signed in to the ChatGPT account associated with the charge.
OpenAI says residents of the EU, UK, and Turkey may qualify for a prorated refund if they cancel within 14 days of purchase, subject to its process and conditions. Separately, OpenAI documents a possible discretionary refund for an unused individual subscription purchase requested within seven days of the charge, along with review of specified exceptions such as billing errors. Neither route guarantees a refund in every case. An approved refund may affect access differently from ordinary end-of-period cancellation. Read OpenAI’s refund guidance for the applicable process.
Troubleshoot a missing subscription or cancel control
Start with the receipt, not browser fixes. Identify the merchant, switch to the account used for that purchase, and inspect that platform’s subscription list. A plan can be absent because you opened the wrong ChatGPT, Apple, or Google Account, or because it is managed by a different platform.
- Web Billing controls are missing: Confirm that you are signed in to the ChatGPT account used for purchase. OpenAI recommends trying another browser if the Billing controls still do not appear.
- ChatGPT is absent from Apple Subscriptions: Check the Apple receipt and other Apple Accounts. If Apple shows an expiration notice without a Cancel button, it may already be canceled.
- ChatGPT is absent from Google Play: Switch Google Accounts and inspect the purchase receipt before contacting support.
- You cannot access the directly billed ChatGPT account: Contact OpenAI Support through the Help Center. OpenAI says it may assist with the account or billing email and specified verification details. Provide only what the official flow requests. Never send a full card number.
Use the chat bubble at the bottom-right of help.openai.com. Include a concise issue description, the account and sign-in method, billing platform, relevant dates, and a screenshot with sensitive payment details removed. Do not send passwords, one-time codes, session cookies, or authentication tokens. For an Apple or Google account issue, use that platform’s official support route.
Check for separate Business or API billing
Canceling a personal ChatGPT plan does not necessarily change a Business workspace subscription or API billing. ChatGPT and the API platform have separate billing systems. If you see multiple charges, inspect each invoice and identify the product, workspace, and billing owner before acting. Use the Business steps above for eligible self-service workspaces; ask your organization’s designated billing administrator about Enterprise or Edu.
For an organization that tracks SaaS renewals, a human-owned log can record the account or workspace, billing platform, provider subscription reference, status, cancellation request and confirmation timestamps, next billing date, evidence reference, and separate refund request status. This proposed tracking practice does not connect to or cancel a ChatGPT subscription. Organizations building a broader renewal process may consider operational systems consulting; that work is separate from platform cancellation.

Frequently asked questions
Does uninstalling ChatGPT cancel my subscription?
No. Cancel through the platform that billed you, then verify its subscription status.
Does deleting my ChatGPT account cancel an Apple subscription?
No. Apple-billed subscriptions must be managed through the relevant Apple Account.
Can I still be charged after canceling?
Yes. If cancellation is made too close to the billing date, a charge may already have processed. Check the platform’s confirmation and billing status.
Can I subscribe again later?
Re-enrollment may be available, but the option and wording depend on the billing platform and current plan availability.
Will canceling ChatGPT stop API charges?
Not necessarily. API billing is separate, so review the API billing account independently.
