How to Use ChatGPT for Coding: Draft, Debug, and Verify

Use ChatGPT for coding when you need a draft, an explanation, debugging hypotheses, test ideas, or alternative implementations. Give it the project context and acceptance criteria, then use the repository’s own tools and review process to decide whether the proposal is acceptable.

That is different from requesting a complete application and assuming the response is ready to ship. The ClickUp article that popularized several coding prompts is a high-level overview. Its Express, React, Django, debugging, and optimization examples are prompt fragments, not runnable projects with verified dependencies, tests, or performance results. This guide turns those prompts into bounded workflows with inputs, outputs, validation gates, and owners.

The core rule is simple: treat generated code as a draft or hypothesis. Use deterministic tools for exact checks such as syntax, types, formatting, dependency consistency, and test outcomes. Use ChatGPT to interpret context, suggest hypotheses, and draft alternatives.

How to use ChatGPT for coding safely and usefully

Start with a task that has a clear boundary. State what should change, what must remain true, and how acceptance will be measured. Ask for a defined output such as a minimal patch, a list of assumptions, named files, or a regression test. Then inspect the response in the environment where the code will run.

A developer should remain responsible for unresolved assumptions and changes involving authentication, authorization, payments, migrations, cryptography, infrastructure, data deletion, or other significant security and operational risks. The model can contribute a proposal, but it does not approve the proposal.

Choose the right coding surface before you prompt

ChatGPT code blocks, Canvas, Codex, Codex Cloud, Projects, and the OpenAI API are different product surfaces. Their capabilities, permissions, supported content, limits, and availability can vary by plan, device, workspace settings, model, and rollout.

Task Suitable surface What it can help with What still needs verification
Small code question or snippet ChatGPT code block Draft, edit, copy, preview supported content, or run supported Python in a sandbox. Project dependencies, runtime behavior, security, tests, and deployment.
Longer conversational edit Canvas Work on longer code with actions such as inline review, adding comments or logs, fixing bugs, and porting code. Whether the edit fits the repository and passes its checks.
Repository-oriented task Codex or Codex Cloud Delegate a coding task in a prepared repository environment and inspect proposed changes. Diff scope, permissions, test results, dependencies, and human review.
Separately built application workflow OpenAI API Build an application that calls models or uses documented coding-development approaches. Your authentication, data controls, error handling, costs, and tests. ChatGPT subscriptions do not include API usage.

OpenAI’s code-block documentation describes editing, previews for supported content, and sandboxed execution for supported Python. Its Canvas announcement describes coding actions for longer work. OpenAI’s code-generation guidance distinguishes ordinary model-based code generation from Codex’s agentic software-development approach.

Decision point

A preview or sandbox run checks a limited, supported case. It is not a build or test run in your project’s target environment. Use it for exploration, then use the repository’s actual toolchain for acceptance.

Projects can group chats, files, and instructions as shared context, subject to plan and workspace limits. Supplied context still needs an accuracy, permission, and privacy review. See the Projects documentation before treating a project workspace as a complete or current copy of a repository.

Write a coding prompt with a contract, not just a request

A useful coding prompt answers five questions: what should change, where may it change, what must remain true, what evidence is required, and what should happen when information is missing? Include the language and exact versions, relevant files or repository boundaries, inputs and outputs, invariants, error behavior, security constraints, performance targets when relevant, required tests, and the requested response format.

Ask the model to list unknowns before proposing code. This prevents it from silently inventing a framework version, database behavior, deployment target, authentication method, or package manager.

The following is an illustrative prompt contract, not a runnable application or verified project template:

{
  "goal": "Add a JSON health endpoint to the existing service",
  "runtime": "State the actual language, framework, and versions",
  "repository_boundary": "Name allowed files and relevant conventions",
  "acceptance_criteria": [
    "Return the agreed response shape",
    "Keep existing tests passing",
    "Add a test for the endpoint"
  ],
  "constraints": [
    "Do not add dependencies without explaining why",
    "List unknowns before proposing a patch"
  ],
  "response_format": [
    "Assumptions",
    "Files to change",
    "Dependency changes",
    "Proposed patch",
    "Tests and commands to run"
  ]
}

Share a minimal reproducible example or the relevant files rather than an unrelated source dump. Remove credentials, tokens, private keys, and personal data. Before sharing proprietary code or regulated information, review the account’s data settings and workspace controls. OpenAI explains that data-use treatment differs between consumer ChatGPT, business products, and the API in its data-use guidance.

01Define the taskRecord the goal, repository boundary, constraints, acceptance criteria, and responsible developer in the team’s normal work-tracking system.
02Request a bounded proposalAsk for assumptions, named files, dependency changes, a minimal patch, and tests. The model proposes; it does not approve.
03Inspect the changeCheck assumptions, dependencies, architecture, and the diff against the requested scope before running or installing anything.
04Run project checksUse the repository’s documented install, build, lint, type-check, security, and test commands. Record the revision, environment, commands, and results.
05Approve or routeA human reviewer approves an acceptable patch. Route failed checks, unresolved assumptions, or high-impact changes to the component owner instead of requesting unrestricted rewrites.

Use ChatGPT to draft scaffolding and boilerplate

ChatGPT can propose an initial structure for an Express service, React feature, Django application, Flask API, HTML page, or Java test suite. A framework name alone does not specify a complete project. The source article’s examples do not provide versions, package manifests, configuration, security decisions, or test results. Read the ClickUp examples as coding prompts, not tested templates.

For a new scaffold or a bounded change, specify the framework and version, package manager, runtime, deployment target, database and authentication assumptions, existing conventions, required files, input and output contracts, and project commands. Ask for a file list before asking for full contents. That makes unnecessary architecture and dependency choices easier to reject.

The operational chain is: define the scope, request named files and assumptions, inspect the proposed architecture and dependencies, install through the project’s normal dependency controls, run the build and checks, and review the change before committing. Reject dependencies that are unnecessary, incompatible, unmaintained, or outside the project’s policy. The assigned developer owns dependency selection and approval.

For repository-oriented assistance, Codex Cloud documentation describes isolated workspaces prepared with repositories, tools, dependencies, and access settings. A new task creates a separate workspace, so do not assume uncommitted work from another task will carry over. Inspect the resulting diff and test results before using it. Debug an existing function with a reproducible case

Give ChatGPT the smallest code sample that reproduces the failure, the exact error and stack trace, runtime and dependency versions, relevant configuration, input, expected behavior, and observed behavior. Ask for ranked hypotheses, the evidence for each, a minimal patch, and a regression test.

Keep the original reproduction in the work item. The AI task is to propose hypotheses and a patch. The developer then runs the failing case and regression test before and after the change, records what changed, and either confirms the diagnosis or records the remaining uncertainty.

Use diagnostics that match the failure. For suspected memory growth, use a profiler or runtime diagnostics. For a slow SQL query, capture the actual database engine’s query plan and timings. A plausible explanation can help select the next measurement, but it is not a confirmed root cause.

If the patch does not resolve the original input, do not broaden the change into an unrestricted rewrite. Preserve the failed attempt, add the new evidence to the issue, and route the case to the component owner or incident process when production behavior is affected.

Generate tests and use execution as one check

Ask for tests separately from an implementation. Supply the public interface, error model, test framework and version, representative fixtures, and the requirements that matter. Request boundary cases, invalid inputs, authorization failures, timeout behavior, and retry behavior when those concerns are part of the contract.

Run the tests with the project’s actual runner and dependencies. Review whether each test checks a requirement or merely confirms the generated implementation. Mocks can isolate a unit, but they can also hide problems at database, network, permission, serialization, and deployment boundaries. Add integration or environment-level checks where those boundaries matter.

Supported Python code blocks can run in a sandbox, and supported content can have previews, subject to availability and permissions. Use those features for a small, self-contained reproduction or exploratory check. Use the target repository’s runtime, dependencies, test runner, and configuration for acceptance.

Evaluate algorithm and performance suggestions with evidence

Before asking for an optimization, describe the current approach, representative input size and distribution, correctness requirements, memory limits, runtime, and measured baseline. Ask for alternatives with time and space complexity, tradeoffs, assumptions, and cases where each may perform poorly.

Benchmark equivalent implementations on representative data and confirm that the result preserves behavior. An asymptotically better algorithm can still be slower for small inputs or unsuitable because of memory, ordering, concurrency, or update costs.

For a SQL rewrite, include the database engine and version, schema, indexes, representative parameters, baseline query plan, and timings. Compare plans and timings under equivalent conditions. If an index is proposed, include storage and write costs. Report a performance improvement only when comparable measurements show that the change meets the stated workload constraint.

Keep generated changes reviewable, private, and traceable

Before a merge or automated write-back, confirm the target repository and immutable revision, restrict the diff to approved files, run the required checks, inspect data handling and permissions, and obtain human approval for high-impact changes.

Before merge or write-back
  • Confirm the repository, branch, and immutable commit being changed.
  • Keep the patch within the approved files and task scope.
  • Run the required checks and record the commands, environment, and results.
  • Check permissions and remove secrets or prohibited personal data from prompts and records.
  • Record reviewer approval and route authentication, authorization, payments, migrations, cryptography, infrastructure, and data deletion work to an authorized human.

For an automated coding workflow, keep the logical task, model or tool attempt, generated patch, test run, and deployment as separate records. A proposed attempt record might contain a project identifier, repository reference, immutable commit SHA, prompt version, tool identifier, run ID, input hash, output or patch hash, and reviewer status. This is an illustrative implementation design, not an OpenAI-published event model.

A test-run record should have its own grain, such as repository reference, commit SHA, test command, environment fingerprint, and run-attempt ID. A citation record should identify one source URL and retrieval timestamp. Do not use project ID plus calendar date as a universal key, because multiple prompts, retries, model variants, and citations can occur on the same day.

Choose a deliberate unique key for each declared row grain and enforce it in the database. When concurrent workers or retries can create duplicates, use a database uniqueness constraint with an atomic upsert or transactional insert. A lookup followed by an insert is not race-safe. Track retry attempts separately from the logical coding task so a retry does not silently become a second accepted change.

A practical rule for deciding when to use ChatGPT

Use deterministic tools first when a condition is exact and repeatable: a type must match, a lockfile must be consistent, a test must pass, a security rule must hold, or a value must fall within a defined range. Use ChatGPT to explain a complex stack trace, suggest likely causes, draft test ideas, summarize unfamiliar code, or compare possible approaches.

For a low-risk task, write one acceptance test before prompting. Ask for a minimal proposal, record the existing workflow, run the project’s checks, and note whether a developer accepted the change after verification. This gives you evidence about the workflow without claiming a universal productivity gain or treating generated code as production-ready.
