How to Improve Business Skills: Choose a Resource and Practise

To improve business skills, define one work behavior, choose a resource that supports practice, apply what you learn to a real or realistic task, and review the result against a clear standard. For example, if cash-flow terms are unfamiliar before a budget discussion, study the relevant concepts, annotate a sample budget, then check your explanation and calculations with an appropriate reviewer.

Business skills can include financial literacy, marketing, sales, communication, or management. A broad aim such as “get better at business” is difficult to practise or assess. A specific behavior gives you a useful starting point. Learning resources can support development, but a resource page alone does not establish a career or business-performance benefit.

The useful question is not “Which course should I collect next?” It is “What do I need to do differently, and which format will let me practise it?”

Start with a skill gap, not a list of courses

Describe what you want to do differently in a situation where the skill matters. Identify the task, the work product you can create, and the person or standard that can help judge it. For example, replace “learn marketing analytics” with “explain campaign results using conversion rate and cost per lead in a team review.”

Distinguish a knowledge gap from a practice gap. If terms are unfamiliar, a reference or lesson may help. If you need to speak clearly, negotiate, or respond to questions, you need an opportunity to practise that behavior and receive feedback.

work_situation: review a sample monthly budget
skill_target: explain revenue versus cash available for expenses
practice_task: annotate the sample budget
reviewer_or_standard: finance reviewer or lesson material
Choose for practice, not volume

A resource fits when its format supports the behavior you need. A reference can clarify a term, but it will not by itself give you practice explaining that term in a meeting. Choose the smallest useful resource, then make time to apply it.

Which resource fits the skill you want to develop?

Use this comparison as a format guide, not a ranking. Check the exact course, activity, or publication page for current content, cost, requirements, and availability before committing.

Learning need Resource to investigate What the format can provide
Business or finance terms Investopedia financial-term dictionary or its business-startup guidance Introductory explanations and terminology for focused questions. These are editorial resources, not professional financial, legal, tax, or accounting advice.
Lessons and practice in a subject it covers Khan Academy Khan Academy states that its learning library is free. Check its current catalog for the specific topic you need.
Marketing or sales learning HubSpot Academy Training and certification options across marketing, sales, customer service, and related areas. Verify the selected course’s terms and requirements.
Speaking with live feedback Toastmasters Club activities can include planned speeches, impromptu responses, feedback, and leadership roles. Check local meeting access and fees.
Ideas, examples, or business perspectives TED business talks or Harvard Business Review Talks and articles offer exposure to ideas. They may not include structured exercises or feedback.

A reference can answer a focused question, a course can offer a more structured path, and a club can provide live practice. Talks and articles are useful for exposure, but may leave you to design the practice yourself. These distinctions describe format, not proven learning outcomes.

Turn a learning resource into useful practice

Keep the cycle small: choose a task, study only the material relevant to it, produce a work-like artifact, and have that artifact reviewed against a stated criterion. The learner owns the practice. A manager, peer, instructor, or club participant can review it where available.

01Choose a work taskName the target behavior and a real or realistic task. Output: a one-line skill target. Owner: learner.
02Study the relevant materialUse only the lesson, reference, or guidance needed for that task. Output: a short note on what to apply. Owner: learner.
03Make a practice artifactDraft a brief, annotate a sample budget, or deliver a short update. Save it in a personal learning log or an approved work location. Owner: learner.
04Review and choose the next stepCompare the artifact with a specific criterion and record feedback. Repeat, revise, or apply it to work. Owner: learner, with a reviewer where appropriate.

A certificate can document completion where a program offers one; it does not, on its own, show how well someone can apply a skill at work. HubSpot Academy explains how certification records can be managed in its certification support guidance.

Three practical skill-to-practice plans

These are hypothetical examples, not vendor templates or evidence of guaranteed outcomes. Keep confidential company and customer information in authorized systems. AI is optional. If used, limit it to generating practice questions or draft prompts from non-sensitive notes, and check its output against the selected learning material.

Trigger or need Resource and practice Validation Action or fallback
A learner encounters unfamiliar finance concepts while preparing to discuss a budget or operating decision. Use a relevant Khan Academy lesson or Investopedia guide. Produce an annotated sample budget and a short explanation of revenue versus cash available for expenses. Check calculations against the source material. If the work may inform a real financial, tax, accounting, or investment decision, ask a qualified finance or accounting reviewer to confirm it. If revenue and available cash are confused, revisit the relevant material and correct the annotation before sharing it. Store study notes separately from confidential company data.
A learner needs to practise a defined marketing or sales behavior, such as writing an email brief or reviewing campaign performance. Select a current HubSpot Academy course for the target behavior. Produce a campaign brief naming its audience, purpose, and success measure. AI may suggest an outline only from approved, non-sensitive inputs. A peer or manager checks the artifact against approved team standards. Confirm the individual course page’s current content, requirements, and certification terms. If the brief lacks an audience or measurable purpose, revise those fields and request a second review. Course completion does not replace approval of the work.
A learner needs to present a project update, recommendation, or proposal more clearly. Practise at a Toastmasters meeting or in a peer session. Deliver a short update stating the recommendation, supporting reason, and requested decision. Ask a real listener or use the club’s available evaluation process to assess clarity, organization, and response to an unplanned question. If listeners cannot identify the requested decision, revise the closing sentence and practise again. Verify the chosen club’s current access, format, and fees.

For marketing practice, HubSpot Academy has current pages for Business Analytics Training and the Email Marketing Certification. Treat each as a course destination to inspect, not as a guarantee that its content or requirements match an older description.

How can you tell whether the plan is working?

Track completion separately from application. For each attempt, record the target behavior, practice date, artifact, review criterion, feedback, and next action. Choose a behavior-based check: does the presentation state its recommendation and supporting evidence, or does the campaign brief identify its audience and intended action?

Review one practice attempt
  • The target behavior is specific and observable.
  • A practice artifact exists and is saved in an appropriate place.
  • The review criterion matches the skill target.
  • Feedback identifies a concrete strength or change.
  • The next action is to repeat, revise, apply, or seek help.

A short learning plan can show whether you completed practice and changed an artifact. It cannot by itself prove a career, revenue, or productivity improvement. Use human review where judgment matters; an automated score is not required.

Choose one next step and review the resource before you commit

Pick one work behavior, one resource, and one upcoming task on which to practise it. Schedule the practice and name who, or what standard, will review the result. Check the exact official page for current content, availability, fees, schedules, and certification terms before enrolling or joining.
