Pardot Alternatives: How to Choose a Platform and Plan the Migration

The best Pardot alternative depends first on whether Salesforce remains your CRM system of record. If sales relies on Salesforce accounts, opportunities, ownership, and reporting, replacing Marketing Cloud Account Engagement does not automatically mean replacing Salesforce. Shortlist marketing platforms against your CRM strategy, integration requirements, workflow complexity, budget, and capacity to redesign automation.

Pardot was rebranded as Marketing Cloud Account Engagement in 2022. Salesforce retired the Pardot Classic App on October 17, 2022, but that does not establish that Account Engagement itself is being discontinued. Salesforce currently describes Marketing Cloud Next as a native Salesforce platform path and Account Engagement+ as an option for eligible existing customers seeking newer capabilities without a mandatory platform switch.

This guide separates platform selection from migration planning. It compares operating fit and documented integration conditions, then shows how to separate record transfer from automation redesign. No vendor should be assumed to import Account Engagement journeys, scoring, forms, or attribution logic unchanged.

Which Pardot alternative should you choose?

Decide whether Salesforce remains the CRM system of record before ranking marketing automation features.

Use two gates before building a shortlist:

  1. CRM boundary: Will Salesforce remain authoritative for people, accounts, opportunities, campaigns, campaign members, and sales ownership, or is CRM consolidation part of the project?
  2. Operating priority: Is the main goal a unified marketer-facing platform, enterprise ABM and program complexity, lower entry cost, or deeper investment in the Salesforce platform?

Marketing Cloud Next and Account Engagement+ are not interchangeable choices. Marketing Cloud Next is positioned as a platform built natively on Salesforce. Account Engagement+ is described for eligible existing customers who want newer capabilities without a mandatory platform switch. Confirm edition, eligibility, contract terms, permissions, data requirements, and implementation scope with Salesforce.

For product naming and current positioning, see Salesforce’s Classic App retirement documentation, Marketing Cloud editions overview, and explanation of next-generation marketing and Account Engagement+.

Compare Pardot alternatives by operating fit

Compare a real lifecycle rather than matching feature names. For every finalist, test a marketing response through CRM record creation or update, campaign membership, sales follow-up, and opportunity or revenue reporting. At each handoff, record the object, sync direction, trigger, and accountable system.

Platform or path Strongest fit Salesforce relationship to verify Pricing model or public snapshot
HubSpot Marketing Hub Teams seeking a unified, marketer-facing platform Configurable integration for supported contacts, companies, deals, activities, and other data. Installation does not sync every existing record automatically. Verify objects, mappings, imports, and rules. Free and paid tiers. Packaging varies by seats, marketing contacts, billing, onboarding, and add-ons.
Marketing Cloud Next Organizations extending their Salesforce platform investment Built natively on Salesforce. Confirm edition, data, permissions, and implementation requirements. Growth is listed at $1,500 USD per organization monthly, billed annually, on the cited regional page.
Account Engagement+ Eligible existing Account Engagement customers seeking newer capabilities without a platform switch A distinct Salesforce path, not the same product choice as Marketing Cloud Next. Confirm eligibility and commercial terms. Listed at $1,250 USD per organization monthly, billed annually, on Salesforce’s pricing page.
Adobe Marketo Engage Complex enterprise programs and ABM where implementation overhead is justified Adobe documents bidirectional synchronization for specified objects, including leads, contacts, and Salesforce campaigns. Other objects can have different directionality. Quote-based. Request pricing for the defined workload.
ActiveCampaign Teams whose required automation and CRM scope fit the selected plan Verify current integration scope, object coverage, and plan-specific capabilities. An integration listing does not establish full object parity. Dynamic pricing varies by plan, contacts, channels, billing terms, and add-ons.
Zoho Marketing Automation Budget-conscious teams whose needs and CRM scope fit the plan Zoho documents Salesforce integration for supported records. Verify objects, direction, field mappings, update triggers, and contact limits. Standard is listed from $14 monthly for 1,000 contacts when billed annually.

Pricing snapshot checked October 12, 2026. Prices and packaging change. HubSpot’s current page lists Starter from $7 per seat monthly, Professional from $800 monthly, and Enterprise from $3,600 monthly. Professional and Enterprise also list one-time onboarding fees of $3,000 and $7,000. Included seats, contact limits, promotions, billing terms, and add-ons affect the quote. Salesforce figures above are organization-level annual-billing prices, not directly comparable with per-seat or contact-tier offers. ActiveCampaign is dynamic and Marketo requires a quote. Check the current HubSpot pricing page, Salesforce pricing page, ActiveCampaign pricing page, and Zoho pricing page. Budget implementation, data work, training, add-ons, and any parallel run separately from software licences.

Marketing Cloud Next

Native Salesforce platform path

Assess it when extending Salesforce is the aim. The decision question is whether native platform alignment justifies the edition, data, permissions, and implementation scope.

Account Engagement+

Existing-customer path

Assess it when an eligible Account Engagement customer wants newer capabilities without a mandatory platform switch. Confirm eligibility and commercial terms.

For integration details, HubSpot documents supported synchronization, prerequisites, mappings, imports, permissions, and network restrictions in its HubSpot-Salesforce integration guide. Adobe documents object-level Marketo synchronization in its Marketo synchronization reference. Zoho documents its connection process in the Zoho CRM integration guide. These are integration references, not complete Pardot migration runbooks.

Choose based on CRM strategy, not a feature checklist

Retain Salesforce when sales processes, opportunity reporting, compliance, ownership, or campaign operations depend on its records. Consider HubSpot when the operational goal is a more unified marketer-facing platform while Salesforce remains connected. Assess Marketing Cloud Next when extending Salesforce is the objective. Assess Account Engagement+ separately when an eligible customer wants a different Salesforce path without a mandatory switch. Marketo is a candidate when enterprise program and ABM complexity warrants its implementation effort. Consider ActiveCampaign or Zoho only after validating the required CRM objects, journey controls, reporting, and plan limits.

A new marketing platform does not by itself require a CRM replacement. A CRM replacement adds identity, relationships, ownership, permissions, reporting, and data-governance work. For each critical object, document the authoritative system, permitted write direction, matching key, and conflict owner. Include people, accounts or companies, opportunities or deals, campaigns, campaign members, activities, and consent.

Decision point

Treat every unconfirmed object relationship as a proof-of-concept question. Measure sync completeness by object, duplicate rate, consent-state match, enrollment and suppression outcomes, sales handoff latency, and report reconciliation before selecting a finalist.

If ownership boundaries or CRM architecture are unclear, CRM systems consulting can help define the system of record and object responsibilities before a platform decision.

Plan the migration as two projects: records and behavior

Record migration covers people, accounts, campaign membership, consent, historical scores, and required activity data. Behavior migration covers forms, landing pages, scoring rules, automation, Engagement Studio programs, journey positions, and attribution definitions.

Salesforce’s Account Engagement account-migration documentation lists non-exportable assets including Dynamic Lists, Automation Rules, Engagement Studio Programs, Forms, Form Handlers, and Landing Pages. It also identifies fields that cannot be imported in that process, including Grade, Prospect ID, subscription fields, bounce fields, and some timestamps. This documentation is not a complete specification for every third-party move, but it is strong evidence against promising a lossless copy.

Use an asset register with one row per source asset. Record the owner, business purpose, dependent fields, destination equivalent, transfer or rebuild method, test case, and cutover decision. If the destination does not support the same object, trigger, relationship, or attribution semantics, translate the business behavior instead of forcing a one-to-one copy.

01Inventory and freezeList records, fields, assets, dependencies, owners, consent rules, and reports. Marketing operations owns the register; the privacy owner identifies restricted data.
02Map records and behaviorDefine field types, allowed values, object relationships, authoritative systems, and destination behavior. CRM and marketing owners approve their respective maps.
03Rebuild high-value journeysRecreate a limited set of important journeys using destination-native logic. Test entry, suppression, timing, exit, and downstream actions before activation.
04Pilot and reconcileRun a controlled cohort, compare records and outcomes, resolve exceptions, and obtain business approval for consent and attribution decisions.
05Cut over by cohortRecord the final source-event timestamp, approve destination enrollment rules, and switch journeys or segments in stages. The project lead owns cutover and exception tracking.

Preserve source IDs, migration batch IDs, source update timestamps, and transformation versions where supported. Keep historical score and grade values distinguishable from newly calculated scores. Limit exports and reviewer access to the fields required for the project.

Make the implementation decisions explicit

The following table describes proposed implementation guidance, not vendor-published modules or schemas. Use it to turn a platform demo into a controlled test.

Trigger Optional AI job Validation gate Action and fallback
Migration project begins and source assets are frozen Classify undocumented free-text asset descriptions into proposed categories Asset owner confirms purpose, dependencies, data classification, exportability, and destination equivalent Write an asset-register row. Send unclear ownership or retention questions to marketing operations or privacy review.
HubSpot-Salesforce coexistence pilot starts None required. Use deterministic mappings Confirm subscription eligibility, permissions, IP restrictions, object selection, field mappings, matching rules, and existing-record behavior Import or synchronize a controlled cohort. Route mapping, relationship, and consent mismatches to the CRM integration administrator.
Marketo program must connect to a Salesforce campaign None required. Use approved status mappings Confirm API access, sync-user permissions, field visibility, program-to-campaign association, compatible member statuses, and object directionality Reconcile campaign members after initial synchronization. Investigate permission and status exceptions with the Salesforce administrator.
Source journey is scheduled for deactivation Suggest a draft translation of legacy free-text scoring rules for review Validate identity, consent, suppression, score type, journey position, last-event boundary, and duplicate-enrollment risk Hold enrollment until marketing operations approves the rebuilt journey and scoring threshold. Invalid states go to a named reviewer.

Keep deterministic rules ahead of AI when consent, suppression, routing, score thresholds, allowed values, or duplicate prevention are involved. AI can help group undocumented legacy descriptions, but it should not set consent, enroll a person, change a sales-routing score, or alter revenue attribution without human approval.

Keep Salesforce synchronization and campaign reporting explicit

Salesforce can often remain the CRM while marketing automation changes, subject to contracts, editions, permissions, dependencies, and integration design. For a HubSpot pilot, configure the selected objects and field mappings, then deliberately decide which existing records to import or synchronize. Test contacts, companies or accounts, deals or opportunities, activities, owners, relationship links, and changed field values. Check Salesforce login IP restrictions and permission failures.

For Marketo, confirm API access and appropriate field visibility for the synchronization user. Adobe documents bidirectional synchronization for leads, contacts, and Salesforce campaigns, while many other objects are Salesforce-to-Marketo only. Marketo’s initial synchronization can take hours or days. Configure program-to-campaign links and compatible member statuses where needed, but do not assume Account Engagement structures are copied.

For Zoho, verify the current supported objects, directionality, mappings, update triggers, and contact-limit behavior. Zoho states that active syncs importing contacts can be disabled when the plan contact limit is exceeded, so include limit monitoring and an exception owner in the operating plan.

Attribution requires a separate design. Define the attribution unit, window, model, campaign authority, offline activity handling, and whether historical reports will be recalculated or retained as a frozen baseline. Salesforce campaigns and destination-platform campaigns may be different objects, so matching campaign names does not prove that membership or revenue reports reconcile.

Preserve scoring and journey continuity without copying assumptions

Historical scores or grades may be retained as fields if the destination supports them, but plan to translate or rebuild scoring rules, segments, and automation behavior. Before disabling a source journey, capture the person’s identifier, historical score and grade, consent state, journey name and position, and last processed event timestamp. Define the destination enrollment rule and a boundary timestamp so the pilot can detect missed or repeated actions.

The following is an illustrative migration snapshot, not a vendor schema. One record represents one person’s state in one journey at one capture time. It is not an atomic email-open or page-view event.

{
  "source_system": "Account Engagement",
  "source_record_id": "prospect-example-1042",
  "migration_batch_id": "pilot-01",
  "historical_score": 72,
  "historical_grade": "B",
  "consent_status": "subscribed",
  "current_journey": "High-intent demo nurture",
  "journey_id": "journey-example-07",
  "journey_position_timestamp": "2026-10-12T10:30:00Z",
  "last_processed_event_id": "event-example-88",
  "review_status": "pending"
}

For event-level migration, store one row per source event with a source event ID where available. If none exists, construct a grain-specific key that includes the source, person, event type, event-specific timestamp or identifier, and any run or engine discriminator needed to distinguish repeated observations. A date alone is not an event key.

For contact records, a proposed key is source_system + source_record_id. For a campaign-member state, use source_system + campaign_id + person_id. For a journey-position snapshot, include the journey and snapshot timestamp. For daily aggregates, include the metric, aggregation date, segment, and channel. These are illustrative implementation proposals, not vendor schemas.

When concurrent workers can process the same row, a lookup followed by create is not sufficient. Prefer a database-enforced unique constraint or transactional upsert where supported. Otherwise serialize writes and keep an idempotency store. Route invalid consent values, conflicting identities, missing journey positions, and unsupported field types to a named human reviewer instead of silently defaulting them.

Build a realistic first-year cost and readiness check

Ask each finalist to quote the same workload: contact count and growth, users, CRM objects, campaign volume, required channels, journey complexity, reporting, and implementation assistance. Compare first-year licence fees, onboarding, data migration, integration work, training, contact or seat overages, add-ons, annual commitments, and parallel-run costs. Treat review-site themes as discovery prompts, not proof that a workflow or reporting model will match your current system.

Readiness check before selecting a finalist
  • A named owner is accountable for the CRM system of record and object conflicts.
  • Critical object and field mappings, including consent and suppression, have been approved and tested.
  • High-value journeys and their entry, suppression, exit, timing, and handoff rules are inventoried.
  • A controlled pilot has agreed measures for sync completeness, duplicates, consent, handoff latency, and report reconciliation.
  • Written quotes use the same workload and identify onboarding, implementation, contacts, seats, add-ons, and renewal assumptions.
  • A cutover owner, last-event boundary, exception path, and human approval gate are assigned.

There is no reliable universal migration-duration estimate. Scope depends on data volume, asset complexity, CRM changes, consent review, testing, vendor access, and available people. Choose the platform only after the proof of concept tests your actual lifecycle and the project has owners for both data and behavior.

For teams assessing HubSpot while retaining Salesforce, HubSpot systems consulting is relevant to configuring and validating the coexistence design.
