Schedule filters in Zapier

Schedule filters in Zapier for days and times

In Zapier, you can use filter conditions to make sure a Zap only continues on certain days of the week or at specific times of day. This lets you control when your automations run without changing your triggers or actions.

This how-to guide explains how to set up time-based filter rules, how filter logic works, and how to test your Zap so it behaves exactly as expected.

How Zapier filters work with time conditions

A filter in Zapier is a step that checks incoming data from earlier steps in your Zap. The Zap only continues when the data matches the rules you set. For time-based filters, you usually compare a date or time field against a specific day, hour, or time range.

Key points about filters:

  • They do not trigger a Zap; they run after the trigger.
  • They only check information passed from previous steps.
  • If the filter conditions are not met, the Zap stops and later actions will not run.

You can add a filter immediately after the trigger step or after any action that provides the date or time values you want to check.

Prepare your Zapier trigger data

Before you add a filter in Zapier, confirm that your trigger or an earlier action step provides a usable date or time field. Many apps send data such as:

  • Created date or updated date for a record
  • Event start time or end time
  • Timestamp of a form submission or new message

If you need to transform a date or time into a specific format, you can add a Formatter step before your filter. That way, the filter conditions in Zapier will be consistent and easier to configure.

Add a Zapier filter step to your Zap

Follow these steps to insert a filter that controls when your automation should continue:

  1. Open your Zap in the editor and make sure you have at least one trigger step configured.

  2. Click the plus icon (+) where you want the filter to run.

  3. Choose Filter from the list of available Zapier apps.

  4. Select Filter by Zapier as your event type if prompted.

  5. Click Continue to configure the filter conditions.

Once the filter step is created, you can add one or more rules that compare your date or time field to specific values.

Set Zapier filter rules for specific days

If you want your Zap to run only on particular days of the week, your filter step in Zapier must reference a field that contains a date or day value.

Example: Run a Zap only on weekdays

To restrict an automation to Monday through Friday:

  1. In your filter step, select the field that contains the date or day name. This could be a formatted date from a Formatter step or a field provided by the trigger app.

  2. Choose an operator such as (Text) Contains or (Text) Exactly matches, depending on the field format.

  3. Create rules that match only weekday values. For example, you may filter where the day name is Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday.

If the day value in the incoming data does not match any of these allowed days, the filter will stop the Zap and the following actions will not run.

Example: Run a Zap only on weekends

To allow the Zap to continue only on Saturday and Sunday:

  1. Use the same date or day field as above.

  2. Set rules that match Saturday or Sunday and adjust the logic so any other day fails the filter.

  3. Save the filter and test your Zap with sample data that uses weekend dates.

This approach works the same way whether the day is stored as a full name, abbreviation, or numeric value, as long as your Zapier filter conditions match the exact format.

Configure Zapier filters for specific times of day

Sometimes you need your Zap to continue only during business hours or within a limited time window. With the right field and operator, a Zapier filter can check the hour or full time value.

Check a time field directly

If your trigger provides a clear time value, you can compare that time to a range:

  1. Select the time field in your filter step.

  2. Choose a comparison operator such as Greater than, Less than, or Is between (if available).

  3. Enter the start and end times for your allowed window, making sure they match the field format and time zone.

For example, to keep an automation running only between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., you would configure the filter in Zapier so it allows times within that range and blocks all others.

Use Zapier Formatter to extract an hour

When the time format is complex, you may prefer to extract only the hour value and then filter by that number.

  1. Add a Formatter step before your filter and choose the appropriate date and time transform.

  2. Format the timestamp so it outputs just the hour, such as 09 for 9 a.m. or 17 for 5 p.m.

  3. In your filter, select this formatted hour field and compare it using numeric operators, such as greater than or less than.

This makes your Zapier filters simpler and less error-prone, especially when you work with different date and time formats from multiple apps.

Use AND and OR logic in Zapier filter steps

Zapier filters allow you to combine multiple conditions, which is useful when you want to limit both the day and the time.

Combine weekday and time rules

To have a Zap run only during business hours on weekdays, you might:

  • Check that the day is one of your chosen weekdays.
  • Check that the time or hour falls within your business hours.

You would then configure the filter logic in Zapier so both conditions must be true. This is typically done with AND logic, which means the Zap will continue only when every single rule passes.

Allow multiple day or time options

If you want the Zap to run during two different time windows or on several different days, you may use OR logic. In that case, the Zap continues when at least one condition is met.

Careful use of AND and OR logic makes Zapier filters more flexible while still preventing unwanted runs outside your preferred schedule.

Test and troubleshoot your Zapier time filters

After you configure the filter step, you should test the Zap to verify that the conditions behave correctly.

  1. Use the Test option on the filter step to see whether the current sample data would allow the Zap to continue or stop.

  2. If the filter fails when you expect it to pass, double-check the field format, time zone, and chosen operators.

  3. Try different test records representing weekdays, weekends, and various times of day.

If the Zap runs at times you do not expect, review each condition in your Zapier filter and confirm the logic (AND vs OR) reflects your real schedule rules.
