There is no universal best Evernote replacement. Choose Notion when notes should become structured pages and databases, Joplin when direct ENEX import and flexible synchronization matter, Bear when focused Apple writing outweighs notebook reconstruction, Obsidian when local Markdown ownership matters, OneNote when handwriting and Microsoft compatibility lead, or ClickUp when notes become assigned work. Apple Notes and Google Keep are strong choices for Apple-first capture and lightweight lists.
This guide focuses on what happens to real notes during a switch. It separates vendor-documented import behavior from tests you must run yourself, then gives you a controlled migration process with count reconciliation and duplicate prevention. Pricing and plan details were checked October 28, 2026. Regional terms, billing intervals, taxes, workspace types, and later vendor changes may differ, so confirm current terms on the linked vendor pages.
Start with a representative pilot, not a feature checklist. A destination that accepts an ENEX file may still lose notebook identity, OCR recognition data, dates, links, formatting, or attachment relationships.
Which Evernote alternative should you choose?
Choose according to your information model and migration tolerance:
- Notion: best when notes should become pages or database items with properties, filters, and views. Notion documents direct Evernote import.
- Joplin: best when ENEX import, open-source software, flexible sync targets, or optional end-to-end encryption matter. Joplin documents import of notes, tags, attachments, and metadata.
- Bear: best for focused writing on Apple platforms when you accept rebuilding notebooks as tags or another mapping. Bear documents ENEX import, but ENEX does not contain notebook information.
- Obsidian: best when local Markdown-oriented files and ownership matter more than a native Evernote importer. A current native Evernote importer was not verified in the reviewed Obsidian documentation.
- OneNote: best for free-form notes, handwriting, and Microsoft account compatibility. Cloud storage and account type still affect the practical limits and export route.
- ClickUp: best when a note is an input to Docs, Tasks, owners, deadlines, and project status rather than a personal notebook library.
- Apple Notes: best for Apple-first capture, scanning, handwriting, and iCloud sharing.
- Google Keep: best for fast lists, voice or photo capture, labels, and lightweight reminders. Current reminder management and notifications are integrated with Google Tasks and Calendar.
The first decision is not which app has the longest feature list. It is which information must survive: content, attachments, tags, notebook identity, dates, OCR, internal links, locked-note behavior, and exportability.
Compare the alternatives by fit and migration trade-off
| Need | Shortlist | Decisive limitation or migration note |
|---|---|---|
| Structured knowledge and databases | Notion | Evernote notebooks become pages and notes become list-database items. Individual Free users get unlimited pages and blocks, but Free file uploads are limited to 5 MB per file. Notion describes approximately 5,000 notes as a reliability guide, not a guarantee. |
| Handwriting and Microsoft compatibility | OneNote | The free app uses shared Microsoft cloud storage, including a 5 GB free allowance across Microsoft services. Web notebook export is documented for personal OneDrive, not work or school OneDrive or SharePoint. |
| Local Markdown ownership | Obsidian | Vaults are local folders. Optional Sync is listed at $4 per user/month annually or $5 monthly and advertises end-to-end encryption and collaboration on shared vaults. Evernote conversion remains a separate project. |
| Notes connected to tracked work | ClickUp | Notepad supports conversion to Docs or Tasks, but ClickUp is a work platform. Free Forever lists 60 MB storage. Current Core pricing is $9 per user/month annually or $12 monthly. |
| Apple-first capture and scanning | Apple Notes | Notes use shared iCloud storage. Apple provides 5 GB free, with iCloud+ upgrades separate from a Notes-specific fee. iCloud.com access exists, but web capabilities differ from native apps. |
| ENEX import and flexible sync | Joplin | Joplin imports notes, tags, attachments or resources, and metadata. Complex formatting may change, and Evernote recognition data is not directly preserved. E2EE must be enabled and configured. |
| Fast capture and lists | Google Keep | Keep is suited to quick capture rather than rich formatting or deep hierarchy. Text in photos can be searched in English. Keep reminders moved into Google Tasks during the second half of 2025. |
| Focused Apple-centric writing | Bear | ENEX does not contain notebook information, so use tags or an external mapping. Pro is listed at $2.99 monthly or $29.99 yearly. Free and Pro export formats differ. |
Current public pricing pages list Notion Plus at $10 and Business at $20 per seat/month. Joplin’s official page displays euro-denominated pricing, so do not treat older dollar conversions as current official prices. For current terms, consult Notion pricing, Obsidian pricing, ClickUp pricing, Microsoft storage guidance, Apple storage guidance, Joplin plans, and Bear Pro terms.
A direct ENEX importer is not the same as a faithful notebook migration. Make notebook identity, OCR, dates, tags, attachments, and internal links separate pass-or-fail tests. Select the destination only after a representative pilot shows which relationships survive.
Check migration fit before choosing
Migration fidelity means preserving both note content and the metadata or relationships you depend on. Vendor documentation tells you what an import route generally supports. Your pilot tells you how your own scans, tables, links, attachments, and dates behave.
- Notion: notebooks become pages and notes become items in a list database. Review images, imported dates, tags or mapped properties, and large-batch behavior. Notion documents possible rate-limit backoffs, image cleanup, and date correction.
- Joplin: ENEX import includes notebooks, notes, tags, resources, and metadata. Review colors, font sizes, font faces, tables, links, and scans. Joplin says Evernote recognition data is not preserved directly, although Joplin OCR may recreate recognition data.
- Bear: import ENEX only after deciding how notebook identity will be represented. Exporting notebooks separately and retaining a filename-to-notebook mapping gives you auditable provenance. Bear also notes that trashed notes may remain in an ENEX export.
- Obsidian: treat ENEX or HTML conversion to Markdown as a proposed implementation route, not an Obsidian-verified importer. Test attachment paths, filenames, dates, duplicate titles, and internal links in a disposable vault.
Use five source notes for the pilot: plain text, formatted content, a scanned document, an attachment-heavy note, and a note with internal links. Include tags and dates that matter to daily work. Record the source and destination result for each test instead of marking undocumented fields as preserved by assumption.
Run a controlled Evernote migration
Evernote documents ENEX and HTML export through its Mac or Windows desktop application. Web export is not supported, and Evernote states that users can export up to 100 notes at a time or an entire notebook. Preserve each export before importing. The export owner creates the immutable source copy, the migration operator runs the import, the content owner reviews quality, and the system owner approves cutover.
A migration ledger is a proposed implementation design, not a vendor-published schema. Use one MigrationBatch for each export/import run, one MigrationNote for each source note in that run, and one AttachmentValidation record for each attachment when file-level status matters.
{

The record is illustrative and identifies a note within a specific source account, batch, and destination workspace. Do not use title alone: titles can repeat or change. Where a stable source ID exists, enforce uniqueness on source_system + source_account + source_note_id + destination_workspace. That key identifies the source note’s destination scope, while batch_id records the run that observed it. If source IDs are unavailable, use a deterministic fallback based on source notebook, original timestamp, normalized title, and content hash, while retaining the original values for review.
For concurrent retry workers, use a database-enforced unique constraint and transactional upsert. A lookup-then-create check is not race-safe. Keep attachment counts and attachment validation separate from note status because one note can contain multiple files.
For documented transfer details, see Evernote export guidance, Notion import guidance, Joplin import guidance, and Bear migration guidance.
Choose privacy, sync, and collaboration deliberately
Local storage, cloud sync, and end-to-end encryption are different properties. Compare storage location, encryption mode, key control, sharing permissions, sync configuration, and whether OCR or AI features process content remotely.
- Obsidian: vaults are local folders. Optional Sync advertises end-to-end encryption and collaboration on shared vaults. Decide whether local files alone provide the sync experience you need.
- Joplin: synchronized data can use end-to-end encryption when enabled and configured. Choose a sync target and confirm the encryption setup before syncing sensitive notes.
- OneNote: notebooks synchronize through OneDrive or SharePoint, and Microsoft documents offline edits syncing when connectivity returns. Test the actual account type and devices. The documented web-export limitation is especially important for work, school, and SharePoint notebooks.
- Apple Notes: Apple documents search across typed text, supported handwriting, image objects, and scanned text. Search depends on device, language, note lock state, and attachment type. iCloud synchronization and sharing are available, but web and non-Apple experiences differ from native apps.
- Google Keep: Google documents image-text search in English. Keep reminders are now managed through Google Tasks or Calendar for notifications, so test the workflow users will actually follow.
- ClickUp: collaborative Docs and note-to-task conversion suit shared work. AI Notetaker is documented for transcripts, summaries, and action items, but a reviewer should verify proposed tasks, owners, dates, permissions, and duplicates.
- Does the destination meet your requirement for local files, self-hosted sync, or a configured encryption mode?
- Have you confirmed whether encryption is enabled by default or must be configured?
- Does your account type support the export path you need, especially for OneNote work, school, or SharePoint notebooks?
- Can the app search, open, and sync on the devices you actually use, including offline?
- Can you produce and reopen a usable export from the destination?
- Will notes remain personal, or must they support permissions, collaboration, and assigned work?
For a team process that turns approved notes into assigned work, use a deterministic handoff: a user-selected follow-up becomes a task only after an owner and destination list are supplied. AI may suggest candidate action items from a supplied transcript, but it should not assign fields or create records without review. Store the originating note or transcript reference on the task. See ClickUp setup and automation for related workflow design.
Make the final choice with a small pilot
Choose Notion for database-like organization, Joplin for direct ENEX import and flexible synchronization, Bear for focused Apple writing when notebook-to-tag remapping is acceptable, Obsidian for local Markdown ownership with conversion effort, OneNote for handwriting and Microsoft compatibility, ClickUp for notes that become tracked work, Apple Notes for Apple-first capture, and Google Keep for lightweight lists and reminders.
Test search, offline access, synchronization, and export on your own devices and account type. If an essential migration check fails, change the mapping or test another destination before moving the full library. Do not retire Evernote until the destination passes content checks and you can produce a usable export.
Evernote remains operated by Bending Spoons. That ownership fact does not establish a future closure or product direction. The current Evernote Free comparison lists 50 notes, 1 notebook, 20 tags, 200 attachments, synchronization on one device, and 1 GB storage, subject to regional and account variation. Use the current Evernote plan comparison for confirmation rather than treating those limits as a reason to rush.
